One easy way of integrating already existing social profiles would be to embrace OpneId through Google's Friend Connect or Facebook Connect. This is a must have feature. Students need to be able to communicate with one another on Haiku using the same communicative tools they use outside the classroom. It can make Haiku not just an extension of the classroom but the classroom itself.
Well, I don't know about Gabbly, but there are others that would be great. I assume many could be worked in through your upcoming embed-the-web feature. A simple widget to list skype names of students or other, similar CMC services would be fine too, though the integration of ribbit as a widget would be incredible.
Haiku integration of Weblin.com might also be very interesting.
I think you should allow for both. For teachers who want total control of what their students can put on a profile page, wonderful. But for college use, it would make much more sense to simply integrate already existing profiles on other social sites; students are only in a course for 3 months anyway. This would allow students to "enter" different Haiku classes with the same social identity.
This would be HUGE!
